Red Rim 10" Bottle by Bertil Vallien for Kosta Boda

Back to basics. I wanted to create a classic, decorative and functional series that celebrates the craft and the inherent beauty of the glass." - Bertil Vallien

Red Rim is hand-made in several steps. First, the first parison of lead-free crystal is rolled in powdered color. The color is then heated before the parison is blown into a shape that gives the molten glass its optical pattern. Clear glass is gathered over the parison to enclose the optical pattern in the glass, and then the glass is blown into its final form and shaped into a bowl or a vase. Finally, the piece is attached to a glass-blowing pipe and blown up a touch more before the red rim is applied from a color rod.

Bertil Vallien is by far the most internationally celebrated glass artist and designer in Sweden. He has received numerous awards and his work is well represented in leading museums around the world. He works in a mythical, dream-like world of symbolic imagery. He undertakes what he himself describes as a never-ending research quest, in close cooperation with his co-workers at Åfors glassworks, several of whom have worked with Vallien for decades. Bertil Vallien is known most of all as the master of sand molding. His solid, deep-blue, four-meter-long ship has become part of modern glass history. His creations include Château, one of the best-selling ranges of handmade glasses over the years.

Kosta Boda is committed to "...develop the expressive power of glass, both artistically and technically," while ensuring that, "Swedish glass will always be elegant, exciting, and of superb quality in both craft and design."
